Starting January 9, 2025, the modern Avatar Editor app will no longer be available, and all associated avatars and purchased items will be removed. Players who made purchases within the app between November 23, 2023, and the discontinuation date will receive automatic refunds.
The Xbox Avatar feature, reminiscent of Nintendo’s Miis, debuted in 2008 on the Xbox 360 as part of the "New Play" experience update. Avatars served as digital representations of players and were featured in games such as Kinect Sports, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, and Sonic Free Riders.

While the modern Avatar Editor is being retired, the classic Xbox Original Avatars, based on the Xbox 360-era design, will remain available. These avatars continue to function in certain games like Doritos Crash Course and A Kingdom for Keflings, as well as for profile decoration.
